There’s no question that operating a marijuana business in the United States remains challenging. After all, despite being legal for medical use in a significant majority of states and recreationally legal in many jurisdictions, it remains a federally illegal substance.

Those looking to start a marijuana business in America must look enviously at their Canadian counterparts. Canada fully legalized the substance in October 2018. Certainly, weed businesses north of the border face their own issues, but at least they are treated as legitimate enterprises.

In the United States, you face a battery of rules, including special considerations by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Complying with marijuana tax requirements is confusing and daunting. Worse still, a failure to do so means you could receive an IRS letter or notice of an audit.
