In Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Rodion Raskolnikov experiences anguish, disgust, shame, and a range of other strong emotions after committing a terrible crime. The theoretical justifications of his deed lose all weight when he’s confronted with the legal reality of what he has done.
Sadly, those involved in handing out punishments for marijuana crimes seem to lack this ability to reflect. They can destroy a person’s life (or, in extreme cases even end it), for a practice that has been legal for most of human history.
